I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard graduate students complain that nobody seems to care about their dissertation and that very few people appreciate their topic. This always makes me smile when I hear it, because who ever said your dissertation was going to matter to other people? It would be nice if it did. It would be wonderful if it did. But, presumably, you began this journey for your own reasons, and, presumably, you’ll finish it for your own reasons too. Obtaining recognition or understanding from others is not a necessary condition for your dissertation success. You can finish your degree if no one in the world except you and your committee understand what you’re doing. Other people don’t have to support or love your idea to make it worthwhile. Don’t let feelings of entitlement get in the way of your dissertation progress. Don’t get derailed by feeling that no one understands. Nobody needs to understand anything for you to reach your goal.
