I get asked, pretty often, about how to approach advisors who don’t seem to be on board with helping you finish. Here are some ideas to keep your dissertation process on track: 1) Consider asking your chair directly if s/he is on board with you to finish up by ‘X" date. Find out what s/he needs to see to assist you to finish. 2) Let your advisor know that there are important life goals you’re looking forward to meeting once the dissertation is done. 3) Read other dissertations s/he has signed off on to see how to make yours look closer to this. 4) Consider asking him/her if there’s something else you can do to help the process move more quickly.
