One really important emotional/psychological element of dissertation success is adequate self care. As a generality, most graduate students hardly have the time or extra energy to devote to good self care. While you are away from the daily schedule of the regular semester, be sure to get some extra rest. If you can, take a couple of days completely off to rejuvenate and recharge yourself for 2006. I think this is so important for feeling ready to make strong progress in the new year. While it can be tempting to say yes to every holiday party and other celebratory event, just be sure that you’re not running yourself ragged. The worst thing you can do (dissertation-wise) is run yourself into the ground during the holidays and start the new year with an empty ‘tank’. Enjoy as much as you can, and rest as much as you can, too!
