Something I’ve been thinking about lately is the concept of discipline. Now, if you asked me if I was a disciplined person, I would say absolutely. I mean, after all, I finished my doctoral degree, I’ve started my own business, I work with my clients, and I show up for them 100%, I take on a lot of extra responsibilities and complete those on time too. So for all intensive purposes, I would completely say that I’m a very disciplined person.
Of course, also, except of course, when I’m not. That’s actually what I want to talk about today. What I realized over the past few weeks is that I could be even more disciplined in the most important ways, and let me explain what I mean.
You can be disciplined about anything in your life. You can be disciplined about what you eat, what you wear, who you interact with, where you live, how you live, how you drive, how you produce on the job, how you work on your dissertation, how you move through graduate school.
You can be disciplined about all those things, but the concept that separates that kind of discipline from another kind of discipline is this. You want to be disciplined in the places where it matters most. That will be different, obviously, for everyone. But, the idea behind it is that it takes just a little bit of discipline to get your dissertation done. If you’re not moving forward or making progress as you’d like to, it means that you might be very disciplined, but you are just not applying it in the right place.

So, if my own life what I’ve seen, is that I tend to be very disciplined about things that are really, really easy for me to do. So, in fact, the discipline is not that hard to apply because it’s easy for me to do. It’s things that maybe I’ve done for a long time, and they’ve become routine, or it’s ways of being that I have that have become habits so they don’t require anything of me to keep doing.
All of those are important, but what I realized is that there are certain areas of my life where I could be a little bit more disciplined. That little bit more discipline would make a huge difference in the results I was getting. I expect it’s the same for you. If you have places in your dissertation process or in your life that would benefit from a little bit more discipline, that’s something that you want to look at implementing now.
Left to itself, life will always move towards greater states of entropy, which means that life itself will be random for some time. Now, I’m not any kind of physicist or person who studies the universe, although they do say that there is an order to the chaos. But, sometimes you have to move through a lot of chaos to find any kind of order.
So, the idea is that if there are places in your dissertation process or your graduate school experience that feel chaotic or feel unordered; just by applying a little bit more discipline to those areas, you’ll be able to maximize your results.

So, what I want you to do is I want you to ask yourself this question – Where can I apply just a little bit more discipline in order to get maximum results?
