If you are in the enviable position of having the capability to choose your advisor, here are some ideas to consider when doing so: 1) Select someone who you work well with or believe you will work well with. Choosing a distant or "scary" advisor will not aid your process. 2) Ask other students for recommendations. And weigh these appropriately. It’s not all that likely that an advisor will change his/her style significantly for just you. 3) Aim to work with someone who has helped others finish. This bodes well for you. 4) Communicate clearly about your desires, goals, and preferred methods of communication/contact. Ask your potential advisor about the same. 5) Talk with several possible advisors, and opt to work with the one who feels like the best fit. If you put careful thought into selecting your advisor at the start, you’ll have fewer challenges getting through the process.
