If you've been spinning your wheels or not making the kind of progress that you want to make, here are your next three steps:

1. Your first step is to set a reasonable goal for the next week of progress.
2. The second step is that you need to set up a reward system for yourself
3. The third thing is you need to just actually take the action.

We’ve previously talked about beliefs. The second part of the equation is that of actions, and again as I stated, your beliefs will determine your actions. So you actually need to focus on feeling better first before you can take actions which move you forward.

When we look at actions which move you forward, examples of these would be actions such as; creating a regular schedule to work and actually sticking to it, finding ways to make use of all of the available pockets of time that you have to make progress, avoiding procrastinating or not putting things off that you could take care of today.

In the previous post, I asked you to think about whether you were speaking the language of courage or the language of fear. For many of you, the language is of fear.

So if your conversation is dominated by fear about the dissertation; if you feel worried about whether you'll finish and you talk about this a lot; if you feel upset and you have this secret fear that you're not really going to finish; all of those beliefs will directly impact the actions you take as I mentioned.

Belief is a really important component because it is the underlying foundation for all of the actions that you take. If you truly and honestly don't believe that you can complete the dissertation, you probably, unfortunately, will be right.

The concept of overwhelm is one that frequently arises in the dissertation process. This is not surprising. It's easy to feel overwhelmed when you're faced with such a large and open ended project- and when the only timelines, in general, are those you create for yourself.
