One of the elements of dissertation coaching that always surprises me is how it often seems as if ABD’s expect to find the “perfect time” to finish their dissertations. They carry the dissertation around- both literally and figuratively- and keep putting off working on it for someday. Meanwhile, life keeps going on- they get married [...]

The idea for this post came to me late last week, just after I'd spoken with a new potential dissertation coaching client. As part of this conversation, the client, "Sue", asked me what traits or characteristics might define someone who wouldn't do well in dissertation coaching. I thought this was an interesting question, and it got me thinking.

As I formulated my reply, there were several characteristics which occurred to me. Certainly, someone who never did the work we agreed upon wasn't going to do well in dissertation coaching. Someone who consistently missed calls or agreed upon deadlines also wasn't going to do well.

You have probably heard that insanity defined is the process of doing the same thing but expecting a different result. Dissertation insanity is very similar, but it focuses on how people with normally good time management and coping skills seem at a loss when it comes to the dissertation.

There are so many people who take on the dissertation process as if it's a chance for them to overcome all their limitations (real or imagined) and they want to use this process to rid themselves of all their "bad habits"- just to prove, once and for all, that they have "what it takes" to become a Ph.D.

One of the most stressful types of dissertation coaching experiences is when someone has waited way too long to seek out help. They know they've been struggling for weeks, months, years... and yet they let the clock basically run out- so they lose time, focus, and opportunities to improve their situation. There is little that is more stressful than trying to write a dissertation when you've run out of time. If writing is difficult when you have the option of multiple drafts, imagine how blocked you'll feel if you have to get it all perfect on the first try. (Now I know some of you feel this way anyway, but the truth is that you really don't have to get it perfect on the first try. You just need to get it written.) Anyway, going back to the main point: more of the same brings more of the same.

Well, it's close to the end of another academic year. How is your dissertation process going? Is it moving forward? Staying the same? Or are you losing ground?

As you may know, I've been working with dissertation writers since 2001. My stance has always been that once you start the dissertation you should do everything you can to finish it. I still believe that, but with a twist.

What's the twist? That you should aim to finish as quickly and happily as you can.
