As a graduate student, you're likely incredibly familiar with the concept of delayed gratification- the process of putting off until later what you might otherwise enjoy now. Research shows that toddlers who are able to delay gratification actually turn out, most often, to be more successful. And, certainly, good things come to those who wait.

Except where the dissertation is concerned. Yet, so many of you have resigned yourself to the process taking 'forever'. You keep working and working and working, but make no appreciable progress. Or, otherwise, you keep putting off your progress for another day. Another week. Another month. More years.

My dissertation group coaching participants are making me proud. In just one week, they are reporting results like "I've written more this past week than I had in the past year." and "I am feeling better and like I can do this project."- and that's just with 1 phone meeting. Imagine where they'll be just 8 weeks from now?

It just makes me so proud and gratified when my clients show up, listen to my advice, and act on it.

When working on any long-term and meaningful goal, such as completing the dissertation, it's expectable that you'll experience moments (or days or weeks) of uncertainty, loss of focus, or overwhelm. This doesn't mean anything is wrong. Actually, in fact, it means that you're on the right track.

One of the most important elements of a successful dissertation process (and by successful, I'm referring to both the process AND the outcome)- a successful dissertation process is one where you feel reasonably happy, generally on target, and are making steady progress- as evidenced by pages of writing.

In order to create and maintain a successful dissertation process, you must find points of engagement with your work. While engagement can mean many things, the way I think of engagement is that you are intellectually involved with your ideas, committed to moving them forward, and that you have a frequent relationship with your dissertation, in some form or fashion. This relationship may be reading, writing, developing arguments (it can even include talking to yourself about the project!), but engagement requires each of these elements.

So in the dissertation process, there will come a time (or many) where you have several options to consider and you need to make a decision for one of them.

You might see this when you've come to a choicepoint in writing a chapter- 'should I go this way? or that?'- or you might find yourself needing to decide this during the research design - or during the analysis phase. Or all of the above.
