In a process like the dissertation, it’s somewhat common to experience episodes of depression and anxiety. Some readers have recently written to me, asking about the similarities and differences between depression and anxiety. I thought I’d take a few minutes to list the warning signs for each. Warning signs of depression: *Change in sleeping patterns (either more sleep or less sleep than before) *Change in eating patterns (either larger appetite or smaller than before) *Change in mood, usually a shift to a low mood or blue mood *Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness which don’t seem to go away *Periods of crying or upset, sometimes out of proportion to an event Warning signs of anxiety: *Racing thoughts *Feeling like you can’t calm down *Trouble sleeping because you’re so wound up *Fear of the future/unknown *Constant movement or fidgetiness Depression and anxiety often are experienced together. If you are experiencing a moderate number of any of the above warning signs, please get connected with a licensed mental health professional ASAP, in order to get back on track with feeling good again.
