Maintaining Motivation During the Holiday Season I

Well, today is the busiest shopping day of the year, so I have heard- and it seems like all the malls are packed. During the holiday season, it can be more difficult to find the time, energy, and interest to keep making progress on your dissertation. If you fear that you won’t be motivated to work during the holiday season, and yet feel anxious or uncomfortable about not working, consider the following tips: 1) Lower, but don’t give up entirely, on your dissertation expectations. It might not be possible to make huge, significant progress. Might you make moderate progress instead? Consider setting more reasonable & doable expectations for your work during this time. 2) Get help. Many people are looking for ways to make a little extra money this holiday season. Can you hire help for data entry? Or some child-care so you can relax? or can you get help from visiting family members so you have a little time to devote to your project? 3) Plan strategically. Aim to fit the dissertation into your life as much as possible. If you can’t find the time to write, can you find the time to read articles? Can you reconnect with key people? Can you skim your data and make some preliminary conclusions? Look for more suggestions in our next entry.
