Beware the shifting finish line.

When you define a goal and your time/task parameters, stick to your plan as much as possible. This means being comfortable moving ahead to the next part of the work, even if the first part isn’t yet "perfect". Sometimes, good enough is good enough. Often, ABD’s start to "move the finish line"- each time they get close to completing part of the project, they "move the finish line" further back, so they never quite finish this piece and never move on to the next. If you have been working consistently but don’t feel like you’re making tangible progress, or if you’ve been working consistently, but the chapter never seems get done- check to see if you keep getting close to the finish line and then pushing it away. Shifting your finish lines too often unnecessarily prolongs your ABD status…and who wants that?
