Dissertation Planning for 2007

Sorry for the blog silence…I just realized it’s been a few days since I wrote, but that’s not because you were far from my mind. I was busy putting the final touches on my new dissertation resource I mentioned to you last week. (You can learn more about that below, because today is the big day! It’s finally ready for you! Yay!)

Since we’re just a couple of weeks away from the end of the year, it seems appropriate to take some time here today and ask you to reflect on your progress and achievements over this past year. Be sure to give yourself credit for all that you have achieved and attained.

It is very easy to get caught up in the cycle of achievement without ever appreciating your achievements. (And I’m guilty of this, myself.) Though if we keep achieving without appreciating, we begin to lose some of the thrill or joy associated with getting results. We become burned out, continually seeking the next big challenge- without recognizing how many hurdles we’ve already overcome.

Do you have at least a few things you can acknowledge yourself for? Good. Write them down.

Next, I want you to think about your biggest goals for 2007. What would you most like to do? be? have?

Write these answers down too. (And I hope at least one of them mentioned your Ph.D.)

Now is a good time to review what worked well for you in 2006 and what you can improve in 2007. Write down: what worked well for me, dissertation-wise in 2006? (Examples might be: I worked at least three times a week. I wrote more quickly than before. I was more focused).

Now, write down the answers to this question: What worked well for me, life-wise in 2006? (Examples might be: I exercised regularly. I said no to extra tasks. I spent more time with my family and friends.)

(Remember, the dissertation and life are often connected- if you are feeling stressed in your life, it will transfer to your dissertation, and vice versa.)

Now, for the final question: What will I do more of in 2007 to reach my goals?

Write down your answers.

And there you have it- simple, but meaningful, planning for 2007.

To get the results you want, do more of what works.
