How to develop your original idea

One aspect of the dissertation process is the necessity of developing your original idea. Many graduate students feel daunted or uncertain about how to do this. Our next few posts will discuss this in greater detail. The first place to start is looking to yourself. Why did you choose this field in the first place? What needs/interests/desires does it fulfill for you?  What would you like to share about your field with others?

I am so glad that you are posting on this topic. I am stuck at the point of choosing my dissertation question(s). Sometimes I think that a topic may be interesting but then it is hard for me to talk about it and be excited so I move on to another one. I am also stuck in the limbo between an original idea and a work that builds on what has already been done. How do you know what is original enough? I always feel that I’m putting too much pressure on this idea of originality and that I don’t know how to walk the line between that and incremental steps in research.
