One way to maximize your dissertation process is to use the correct tools. I can’t tell you how many hundreds of ABD’s have come to coach with me, stating, "I have no idea what a dissertation really is. I don’t know what I’m working towards." To which I reply, "Why not read some dissertations from your department to find out what you’re working towards?" So many ABD’s get lost in the process before they even really begin. One way to prevent this from happening? Use the correct tools. While this will be, in most cases, a good computer, a good work space, and good reference materials; good tools also include support systems, knowledge of your dissertation requirements, a general sense of what the finished product should read like, and might even include an editor, statistician and a dissertation coach. Any resource which supports you to finish can be in your repository of "correct tools". One other set of tools you may (or may not) know about are the two books I’ve written on how to complete the dissertation in a year or less. Many of you will already have ordered book #1 (Get it Done! A Coach’s Guide to Dissertation Success) but may not know about book #2 (Get it Done Faster: Secrets of Dissertation Success). You can order either of these from the resources for dissertators page on this website. If you haven’t yet obtained them, I strongly encourage you to do so. You’ll find information in these books which can take months (if not years) off your dissertation process. If your "toolbox" could use a little filling, please do consider these items. Remember, any task is easier to complete when you have all the tools you need to complete it. What tools are you missing? What resources do you need to make the process easier and better for you?
