One of the most important qualities you can cultivate is that of being resilient. Resilience is the capacity to bounce back from hurts, disappointments or ‘failure’. While any of these feelings may have been precipitated by external factors, resilience is an inside-out job. It’s a capacity that we each must build, and, for the most part, we need to do it alone. There are some processes which can make resilience building easier. I’ll share two with you here. 1)Distraction. Distraction is one of the best short-term methods for getting over a disappointment or failure. You can distract yourself by getting hugs, meeting friends for lunch, taking yourself out for a walk, or soaking in the tub. Distraction is a good first line action to building resilience. 2) Cultivating a longer term perspective. If you can take a look at this hurt, disappointment or failure and think about whether it will matter in 5 or 10 years, this thought process can often help you shift from the immediate pain or discomfort to a calmer/more serene viewpoint. In the dissertation process, it’s inevitable that you will be disappointed- at least once. When that occurs, remember "distraction" & "long term perspective" as 2 processes which will help you overcome this stumbling block and get moving again.
